"Some years back my family was on vacation in Montauk, Long Island. I stopped into the gift shop of the Lighthouse there to buy a present for my daughter, and I came across a children's book about an 11 year old English girl from Lyme Regis who discovered an 18 foot ichthyosaur fossil in the early 19th century. I thought it must be fiction; surely I would have heard of her! I went home, did a google search, and was immediately fascinated by her. I am in the BMI/Lehmen Engel Advanced Musical Theatre workshop and so began to write a musical about her." - Tracy Sallows
CURIOUS & RARE is a musical based on the life of Mary Anning (1799-1847), with book, lyrics, and music by Tracy Sallows. Before Charles Darwin and before the word "dinosaur" was coined, Anning made groundbreaking discoveries in the science of paleontology before the field even formally existed. This previously unsung heroine is considered one of the 10 most influential women in the history of science, yet many people have never heard of her.
CURIOUS & RARE was selected by Manhattan Musical Theatre Lab for a staged reading in the Jerry Orbach Theatre of the Theatre Center on 50th and Broadway, where it was wonderfully well received. Subsequently, Tracy was invited by the BMI/Lehman Engel Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop to present songs from CURIOUS & RARE at a BMI Master Class guest moderated by Stephen Schwartz.
Ms. Sallows was awarded an Anna Sosenko Trust Grant for the demo recording of CURIOUS & RARE. Songs from the show were chosen for “The Music Box” concert at the Signature Theatre and “Furthermore” at Urban Stages' Winterfest concert as well as for four Broadway Mother’s Day concerts hosted by Scott Coulter of Spot On Entertainment at Feinstein’s/54 Below in NYC. CURIOUS & RARE was also nominated for a Jerry Bock Award by the BMI Steering Committee, and was a semi-finalist for the National Music Theater Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center in 2020. Tracy is a three-time finalist for the Kleban Prize in both the Lyricist and Librettist categories. She has also acted professionally in Broadway, film, and television. www.tracysallows.com
